My | 3 | non-negotiable daily supplements

It wasn't until my late twenties that I really started being consistent with my daily routines. Now they are a non-negotiable in my life. Whether it's my skin care routine or daily supplements, it really comes down to a simple form of self care- aka self love.

When I started to listen to my body and lean into what it was telling me, I realized how much smoother my days and weeks became rather than a roller coaster of highs and lows. I use to think a night out with friends was what I needed to relax but I've learned it's really about doing less- not more. Craving a release from stress and anxiety in a highly stimulating environment is just adding to the constant fight-or-flight state of chaos many live in.

I don't believe in taking 14 supplements everyday, even if they're natural. If you feel like you actually need that many there is probably an imbalance somewhere within your body. Supplements should be used to support your natural processes and help bridge the gap from average to optimal.

Depending on what time of year it is I will add more, such as elderberry in the fall, but I only have a very select few that I take every day.

  1. Magnesium.

Magnesium is needed for over 300 essential body processes including muscle and nerve function, gut health, mood regulation, blood sugar and blood pressure levels, natural detox and more. It takes 150mg of Mg to maintain balance but 700mg is optimal. (This is why I stress functional labs if something feels off.)

Minerals are foundational and play a vital role in optimal wellness. We're seeing an epidemic of mineral deficiency due to depleted soils and over processed diets. Over 90% of Americans are nutrient deficient- which again, in my opinion, is why standard lab tests are a joke as their acceptable ranges are taken from the average of an overtly unhealthy population.

  • Trace Minerals Concen-Trace goes in my water every morning. It contains magnesium as well as chloride, sodium and potassium for electrolyte balance and full body support.

  • I look forward to my magnesium bath soaks with Ancient Minerals to support natural detox pathways and relax 1-2x a week.

I will always recommend and opt for obtaining nutrients from whole food sources first. Magnesium is found naturally in foods like seeds, nuts, green leafy vegetables and legumes but our foods are not as nutritious as they once were. Even if you eat healthy 90% of the time you will be lacking minerals so supplementation is necessary.

Magnesium oxide is cheap but poorly absorbed. Make sure you look for quality sources!

2. Herbal Vitamin

Most multivitamins contain isolated mega-doses, which can create imbalances in the body. Our vitamin shelves are stocked with products containing hard to absorb nutrients, full of artificial dyes, gums and other unnecessary chemical fillers that are rough on the digestive system.

I prefer Nourish Her Naturally, a liquid daily multivitamin with nutrients in the proper functional dosage, specifically formulated for women. Harnessing the power of nature by using whole herbs rather than synthetics to balance hormones and support overall wellness. Vitamins and minerals are easier to digest in liquid form as they are more bio-available to the body, providing benefits with every ingredient. If you're familiar with herbs you'll love to know that it contains nettle, red raspberry & dandelion leaf!

Men and women are created differently therefore our body's need different support.

My husband takes Nourish Him Naturally formulated for men with heart and prostate health in mind.

3. Mushrooms

Inflammation actually depletes our bodies of the minerals we do have and most Americans are living in a highly inflamed state that breeds chronic disease. Mushrooms are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, supporting nervous system health and therefore total body inflammation response. I have tried multiple mushroom supplements and believe this one provides the most benefit from using whole mushrooms and not just the Mycelium (the seeds) that others use as they are less expensive.

  • Lion’s mane mushrooms: rich in physiologically important components, immuno-modulating, neuro-protective, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Reishi mushrooms: enhances memory and cognitive function, immune-modulating, improves immunity.

  • Cordyceps mushrooms: may help with symptoms of neurological disorders, epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

  • Shiitake mushrooms: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, improves immunity.

  • Chaga mushrooms: improves immunity, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-allergic properties, cognitive enhancement, promotes brain functions like learning and memory.

Supporting our body's innate processes through natural methods of supplementation is the best way to maintain proper function next to eating a whole foods diet.

Every body is different. I do not believe in one size fits all medicine. Our history, environments, lifestyles, toxic load and so much more should be taken into account when determining what health care should consist of.
