5 steps to creating a non-toxic Nursery

After discovering the toxic burden we are surrounded by on a daily basis, it was imperative to prevent unnecessary exposure at home. Establishing a nontoxic nursery was a natural progression since making clean swaps throughout the rest of our house, after all our children depend on us for protection, nutrition, and, ultimately, survival.

The blood-brain barrier is a protective mechanism that helps regulate the entry of substances into the brain. During early development, including infancy, the blood-brain barrier is not fully mature, and certain substances may have a greater potential to impact brain health. Similarly, a baby's liver is still developing and is much less efficient at detoxification compared to an adult's liver.

"Children are often more heavily exposed to toxins in the environment

than adults because pound for pound, children breathe more air, drink more

water, and eat more food than adults." - EPA

Minimizing exposure to toxins and providing a healthy environment can support optimal development. Here are some key considerations and information related to creating a non-toxic nursery environment to ensure for the health and well-being of your baby:

  1. Off-gassings: Off-gassing refers to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from various products and materials. VOCs can contribute to indoor air pollution and may have adverse health effects. When selecting nursery furniture, opt for products made from natural and low-VOC materials, such as solid wood or water-based paints and finishes. Ensure proper ventilation in the nursery to reduce the concentration of VOCs.

  2. Non-toxic materials: Opt for nursery furniture made from natural, sustainable materials, such as solid wood or bamboo. Avoid products that contain formaldehyde, phthalates, lead, and other harmful substances. Look for certifications like Greenguard or Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which indicate that the product meets specific environmental and health standards .

  3. Organic cotton: Choosing organic cotton bedding, mattresses, and clothing can help reduce exposure to pesticides and synthetic chemicals commonly found in conventional cotton products. Organic cotton is grown without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or harmful chemicals. GOTS organic cotton certified ensures the cotton & processing is safe..

  4. Low-toxic choices: When selecting items like paints, adhesives, cleaning products, and personal care products. Read the labels as many marketing techniques are completely false advertising. I trust Earth Mama Organics for personal care products and Truly Free for all of our cleaning needs. You can also consider using natural, eco-friendly alternatives, such as vinegar or baking soda.

  5. Flame retardants: Flame retardants are chemicals added to many products, including furniture, mattresses and clothes, to reduce their flammability. However, some flame retardants have been associated with adverse health effects. Look for products that are labeled as flame-retardant-free or meet flammability standards without the use of harmful chemicals.

When designing a non-toxic nursery, it's crucial to research and select products carefully, considering their composition, manufacturing processes, and certifications. Creating a safe and healthy environment will contribute to your baby's well-being and minimize their exposure to potentially harmful substances. Below are a few of the items I felt confident with in our nursery.

Crib Mattress : Naturepedic Breathable Organic Crib Mattress

Their breathe-through, washable organic mattress pad was a huge selling point aside from the waterproof core and fact that it is made entirely from organic cotton and filling, totally free from harmful chemicals.

The organic cotton breathable surface is actually a 3-dimensional fabric that allows air to flow through the fabric and under the baby for 360° air circulation. In a third-party accredited laboratory independent test designed to measure breathing risk, the Naturepedic breathable crib mattress achieved the lowest risk category.
