Massage Cupping is the adaptation of an ancient technique. No, cupping doesn't hurt - in fact- it's extremely gentle. Cupping is like an "inverse massage"... instead of exerting downward pressure on the soft tissue, it pulls it up, creating a vacuum effect that flushes out lactic acid buildup, increases blood & lymph circulation, and smooths out adhesions & scar tissue. This therapy utilizes glass or silicone cups to create suction on the body surface. These cups are moved over the skin using gliding, shaking, popping and rotating techniques while gently pulling up on the cup, or may be parked for a short time to facilitate joint mobilization or soft tissue release. This suction reaches deep into the soft tissue, attachments and organs. When people are suffering from physical pain, inflammation has usually increased locally in that area. Cupping, then, improves blood circulation in that area by attracting immune cells to that location to increase the repair and recovery process, so that the swelling can go down.

Its purpose? To promote health and healing by loosening soft tissue and connective tissue, scarring and adhesions, moving stagnation and increasing lymphatic flow and circulation. It can be physical or emotional, just as those who get acupuncture might describe a catharsis or "release" when the needles hit a certain point. Cupping operates in the same way from a traditional Chinese medicine standpoint. Our spinal column has nerves leaving each vertebra, connecting to each organ. The base of these nervous connections is what we stimulate on the back. Getting blood flowing in the body is naturally healing, it holds our emotions, so getting things moved helps with the feelings of 'stuck-ness' both emotionally and physically. Another benefit is to pull toxins and inflammation from the body to the surface of the skin where the lymphatic system can more readily eliminate them.

After receiving this type of therapy :

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Do not exercise until the next day

  • Avoid chills, drafts or excessive heat for 4-6 hrs.

  • Avoid hot showers, steam, sauna until next day (use warm water)

  • Do not receive other bodywork for 48 hours as this could overload your system or complicate the work that was done.

  • Remember that Massage Cupping starts working on opening lymphatic pathways for those who have “solid bloat”, debris and congestion, or specific trauma to the tissue, often with dramatic results. Subsequent sessions clear deeper layers of old congestion and restriction to effect significant change in conditions.

  • Skin discolorations reveal old blood trapped in the tissue and will dissipate between 1-14 days.

  • Call your therapist with any questions you might have.

  • Burning sensations can occur and have often indicated a renewed blood flow to the tissue or natural separation of old adhesions in the fascia.

  • Tune in to the messages your body sends, including a change in sleep patterns, appetite, thirst, mood, energy, elimination of fluids and solids, how clothes fit, digestion, breathing capacity, pain levels, endurance, recovery time (athletes) and any other changes that you notice.
