Costco vs. Sam’s Club: The Best Healthy, Organic, Dye-Free & Seed Oil-Free Snack Picks (And Why Costco Wins)

Updated: Jun 24

If you're on a holistic health journey like me, you know that snack time can either support your wellness goals—or derail them completely. I’ve spent years reading labels, decoding ingredients, and doing the legwork on what’s really worth stocking up on when you're aiming for low-tox, dye-free, seed oil-free living. And here's what I’ve found: Costco is the clear winner when it comes to organic, toddler-friendly, real food snacks.

Even though Sam’s Club is only five minutes away from me and Costco is a solid hour’s drive, I still make a bimonthly Costco run to load up Olivia’s pantry. Sam’s is great for gas, last-minute basics, and the occasional decent snack option, but in my opinion? Their produce is surprisingly lacking and their clean snack game just can’t compete with Costco’s variety and quality.

Balance Over Perfection

Before we dive into the snack list, let me say this: low-tox living is not about perfection—it’s about awareness. We can’t control everything, but we can choose to lessen the toxic load where it matters. That starts with reading labels, learning what ingredients actually nourish our bodies, and choosing foods that support long-term wellness. Yes, I love single-ingredient snacks like apples and seaweed, but sometimes Made Good granola minis or Bear fruit wraps just make mom life easier—and that’s okay. Processed is different from ULTRA processed like goldfish and dunkaroos.

A Few Of My Top Favorite Costco Snack Options

(All organic, dye-free, and seed oil-free where noted)

Fruits & Veggies (fresh & dried):

  • Organic Fuji apples (fresh)

  • Whisps freeze-dried strawberries

  • Organic dried mango (no added sugar or oil)

  • Peeled Snacks organic dried apple clusters

  • Kirkland organic hummus cups (pair with sliced cucumber or pretzel chips)

Toddler-Approved Snacks:

  • Made Good granola minis (top 8 allergen-free, organic)

  • That’s It fruit bars

  • Bear fruit rolls (no added sugar or dyes)

  • Organic rice rollers

  • Organic seaweed snack packs (Olivia’s fave!)

  • Once Upon a Farm smoothie pouches (refrigerated section)

Protein & Nutrient Dense:

  • Perfect Snacks peanut butter bars (refrigerated section)

  • Archer grass-fed beef sticks

  • Kirkland organic hard-boiled eggs

  • Organic roasted chickpeas

Crackers, Puffs, & Crunch:

  • Simple Mills almond flour crackers

  • Lesser Evil organic Himalayan pink salt popcorn

  • Hippeas organic chickpea puffs

  • Quinn grain-free pretzel sticks

  • Organic Pretzel Crisps

Dairy & Non-Dairy Options:

  • Organic string cheese (check ingredients for clean versions)

  • Forager cashew yogurt multi-pack

  • Kirkland organic Greek yogurt (high protein)

Pantry Staples for Easy Snacks:

  • Farmers We Love Oats

  • Kirkland almond butter (clean ingredients, no seed oils)

  • Purely Elizabeth grain-free granola

  • Organic Medjool dates (great with almond butter)

A Few Sam’s Club Wins

While Sam’s doesn’t hold a candle to Costco when it comes to organic snack options, they do have some decent finds:

  • Grass-fed ground beef (great quality)

  • Organic hummus

  • Organic frozen fruit for smoothies

  • Organic cage-free eggs

But… let’s be honest: when it comes to produce, Sam’s seriously falls short. The organic options are minimal, often wilted, or just not even offered. This is where Costco dominates, offering bulk organic berries, greens, and toddler-friendly fruits that actually last in the fridge.

Final Thoughts: Control What You Can

Choosing healthier snacks for yourself and your kids isn’t about fear or guilt—it’s about empowering yourself with knowledge and making mindful swaps when you can. There’s no gatekeeping in this lifestyle. You don’t have to be perfect, just intentional. Start small. Replace one snack at a time with a cleaner option, and you’ll feel the shift.

We don’t have to buy into the idea that convenience food has to come with artificial dyes, inflammatory oils, or hormone disruptors. Costco makes it easy to stock your pantry with real-food options that taste good and feel good. So next time you’re making your shopping list, let this be your guide.
